Our History
1972
Union Industries began in 1972, when founder Paul Schofield started Union Tarpaulins in a small shed in Meanwood, specialising in tarpaulin manufacturing and repairs. During the national energy crisis of the early 1970s, the business adapted by developing innovative heat retention curtains that helped companies cut energy costs.
1977
The company moved to Lion Works in Hunslet, Leeds, where Isobel Schofield introduced more efficient production techniques while Paul grew the customer base. Over the following decade, the business expanded into containment systems for airborne particles, including the Unicube Controlled Access System with air filtration, serving industries such as nuclear, chemical, asbestos abatement and aviation.
1980
Union Tarpaulin Co. had grown significantly, acquiring two large Victorian chapels to increase manufacturing and storage capacity, and rebranding as Union Industries.
1989
A key milestone came with the launch of Rapid Roll Factory Doors, a high speed industrial door system that is now the company’s flagship product.
1994
Union added a distinctive touch of character when Paul Schofield installed two golden angels from The Glory of Venice exhibition in its atriums, symbolising the company’s spirit and gifting it the name “Angel’s Wing”.
2014
Paul and Isobel sold the business to its employees, ushering in a new Employee Owned era, under the leadership of Managing Director Andrew Lane, with co-directors Alan Hirst and Tony Metcalfe.
Present day
Union Industries is now a multi-million-pound manufacturing business and proud Employee Owned company, still based in Hunslet, Leeds. With a commitment to local employment, innovation, and sustainable growth, the company continues to thrive while celebrating over a decade of employee ownership.
